UN deputy secretary-general asks for more support for women’s rights

Twenty-five years after a landmark conference for women, many still face danger

Amina Mohammed, the UN deputy secretary-general, recently spoke up about the importance of gender equality as well as women’s empowerment and rights in creating a sustainable future for us all.

This comes 25 years after the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which “placed individual dignity and human rights, including the right to plan one’s family, at the very heart of development.”

Mohammed noted that, although progress has been made, more needs to be done. “The world is still a difficult, and often dangerous, place for hundreds of millions of women and girls,” she said, alluding to child marriages and woman dying during childbirth, among other issues.

She implored the global community to reduce preventable maternal and child mortality as well as eliminate violence and harmful practices against women and girls.

At Children Believe, we promote equality for girls by helping them develop knowledge, skills, confidence and leadership skills through groups, clubs, networks and more.
