UN calls for better protection for Burkina Faso communities following attacks

The latest insurgent attacks killed 132 people in the African nation

As Burkina Faso marks three days of mourning following an insurgent attack in a Northern village, which killed 132 on the weekend, the United Nations human rights office, OHCHR, is calling for greater protection for the people.

“Security incidents, attacks, and kidnappings are a daily reality for millions of civilians,” the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, noted in a recent online update. It said communities “are caught between armed groups, intercommunal violence and military operations that severely impact their access to basic social services, livelihoods and assistance.”

This all comes after years of attacks in the country, which has led to the displacement of more than one-million people in two years.

Children Believe’s team, partners and communities are safe. We don’t have operations in the area of this past weekend’s attack, but we continue to seek ways to support displaced people. Our hearts go out to the families suffering during this difficult time.

About Children Believe

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.

About Childfund Alliance

A member of ChildFund Alliance, Children Believe is part of a global network of child-focused development organizations working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities. ChildFund helps nearly 23-million children and their families in 70 countries overcome poverty and underlying conditions that prevent children from achieving their full potential.
