How is the world helping girls thrive?

One social enterprise is using a surfboard to help make a difference in Indonesia

We love to see when women and girls are encouraged to dream big, and that’s the case in Indonesia where XX Surf, a surf school and social enterprise, is opening up a new world to so many.

“We want to empower [girls] so they know more about the outside world,” Dedi Susandra, XX Surf’s co-founder, told Thomson Reuters Foundation News, speaking of a society where many girls enter into child marriages, become young mothers and lead sheltered lives.

XX Surf offers surf lessons to tourists for a fee and give local girls the chance to learn for free, while also donating part of their profits to educational programs.

At Children Believe, we believe girls deserve equal opportunities, and we work with them to develop their knowledge, skills, confidence and leadership skills through clubs, child and youth groups and children’s networks.

About Children Believe

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.
