UNESCO: we need to implement a new social contract for education

UNESCO proposes new education plan amid growing sustainability challenges.

The idea of transforming education to create a sustainable future highlights UNESCO’s report, Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education. As the world continues to face increasing challenges and inequalities — consider the COVID-19 pandemic — the report notes there’s still time for leaders, community members and global institutions to change course and repair injustices.

“Any new social contract must build on the broad principles that underpin human rights — inclusion and equity, cooperation and solidarity as well as collective responsibility and interconnectedness,” reads the UNESCO report.

It highlights a new “social contract” that should be guided by two principals:

  • the right to quality education throughout life
  • strengthening education as a public common good

At Children Believe, we contribute to creating sustainable futures by providing access to life’s basics, including education; advancing child rights and protection; promoting equality for girls; and partnering with children and youth for change.

With the help of our amazing donors and sponsors, 395,000+ children and youth from 380+ fragile and marginalized groups were supported with better access to inclusive, quality education in 2020/2021.

About Children Believe

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60+ years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.

About Childfund Alliance:

A member of ChildFund Alliance, Children Believe is part of a global network of child-focused development organizations working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities. ChildFund helps nearly 23-million children and their families in 70 countries overcome poverty and underlying conditions that prevent children from achieving their full potential. We work to end violence against children; provide expertise in emergencies and disasters to ease the harmful impact on children and their communities; and engage children and youth to create lasting change and elevate their voices in decisions that affect their lives.
